1. Who we are
whatsdhype is a music ratings and reviews community operated from Nigeria. For the purposes of the Nigeria Data Protection Act, 2023 (NDPA) and similar laws elsewhere, whatsdhype is the data controller for the personal data described here. You can reach us at info@whatsdhype.com.
2. Information you provide
- Account: your email address, and an optional display name and avatar.
- Taste: the genres you choose to personalize your experience.
- Content you create: ratings, reviews, replies, picks, captions, and any music you add to whatsdhype.
- Support: anything you send us when you contact us.
3. Information we collect automatically
- Activity: tracks you preview, the ratings and reviews you post, saves, passes, picks, and who you follow.
- Device signal: a privacy-preserving signal used to prevent abuse and protect against fraud and manipulation.
- Technical data: basic log and session information needed to operate the service securely, including an inferred country/region from your connection used for localized charts and recommendations (not shown in settings and not self-service).
- Usage analytics: aggregated, event-level product analytics that help us understand and improve how the service is used.
4. How we use your information
- Provide discovery, ratings and reviews, library, picks, follows, and charts.
- Personalize your feed based on what you save, rate, review, and pass.
- Protect against fraud, automated abuse, and manipulation of ratings, reviews, or charts.
- Send transactional messages (login codes, password links, a welcome email).
- Send email notifications — activity emails on by default (replies, follows, milestones; off in Settings) and weekly charts when you opt in.
- Understand usage and improve and maintain the service.
We rely on the lawful bases of performing our contract with you (to provide the service), your consent (where applicable), and our legitimate interests in keeping whatsdhype secure and improving it.
5. How we share information
We do not sell your personal data. We share information only with service providers who help us run whatsdhype, under agreements that limit their use of it:
- Email: Resend delivers transactional mail (login codes, welcome) and optional retention digests you can turn off in Settings.
- Infrastructure: hosting (Netlify), database (Neon), and caching (Upstash) providers store and process data on our behalf.
- Analytics and monitoring: PostHog (product analytics) and Sentry (error monitoring) help us understand usage and diagnose problems.
- Music platforms: previews and links use Apple Music; opening Apple Music is subject to its own privacy policy.
- Legal: where required by law, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of whatsdhype and its users.
6. Cookies and sessions
We use a small number of strictly necessary cookies to keep you signed in and to operate the service securely. We do not use third-party advertising cookies.
7. Data retention
We keep your information for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. Some technical records may be retained longer where required for security, accounting, or legal purposes, in a form that limits identification.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live, and under the NDPA if you are in Nigeria, you have the right to:
- Confirm whether we process your data and obtain a copy of it in a common format.
- Correct data that is inaccurate, out of date, or incomplete.
- Request erasure of your personal data.
- Restrict or object to certain processing.
- Withdraw consent at any time, where processing is based on consent.
- Lodge a complaint with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) or your local authority.
You can update your taste, display name, and password from your settings. To exercise any of these rights, contact info@whatsdhype.com; we aim to respond within 30 days.
9. Account deletion
When you delete your account, we remove or anonymize your personal information (including scrubbing your email, display name, and avatar), delete your saved tracks and taste, and sign you out everywhere. Anonymized, non-identifying records may remain where needed to keep the service's ratings and charts accurate.
10. Security
We use technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encrypted connections and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your data and respond promptly to issues.
11. Children
whatsdhype is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. Where the law requires parental consent for minors, that consent must be given before they use whatsdhype. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we will take appropriate steps.
12. International transfers
We and our providers may process your information in countries other than your own. Where we do, we take steps to ensure your information remains protected consistent with this policy and applicable law.
13. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the date above and, where appropriate, notify you.
